NATION BUILDER: EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP & COLLABORATION

In 2010, John Furlong, CEO of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) oversaw what many have described as ‘the best Olympic games ever’. For over 10 years, John remained committed to the goal of bringing the Games to Vancouver, and during that period never swayed from his vision. During John’s Olympic journey, he navigated the many levels of government, worked side by side with several Canadian communities as well as many Aboriginal groups and despite a global economic recession managed to secure a record $760 million in sponsorship.

During John’s session, hear how he remained committed to the Olympic vision and collaborated with stakeholders as his team worked towards 2010. Following a brief presentation, John will be in conversation with friend and colleague, Scott Hutcheson, Chairman & CEO of Aspen Properties.

IF YOU BUILD IT…WILL THEY COME? DOWNTOWN OFFICE MARKET

With several new buildings adding over 5 million square feet to the market in the next five years, will absorption rates be sufficient to maintain a balanced leasing market, or are we headed for significantly higher vacancy rates? Has the departure of CP Rail and Imperial Oil been as impactful as some predicted? This session will provide a review of the downtown office market and predict where it’s headed in the next 12 months. CONCURRENT SESSIONS (Select B1, B2, B3 or B4)

Session B1:

IS CALGARY WEATHERING THE NATIONAL RETAIL STORM?

Retail sales in Alberta and Calgary have consistently outperformed the rest of the country, particularly among luxury brands. With the recently opened Nordstrom’s, anticipated Lamborghini dealership and rumours of other high-end brands, it seems that Calgary isn’t experiencing the challenges faced by other major Canadian cities. But is this sustainable? Will the retail storm eventually makes its way to Calgary? What can the city do to ensure it sustains this popularity? What makes Calgary so appealing?

Session B2:

JUMPING THROUGH HOOPS: INCREASED CONSTRUCTION EXPENSES, HIGHER LABOUR SHORTAGES & RISING ENERGY COSTS

Last year analysts predicted that Alberta would lead the way in higher construction costs and a greater strain on skilled labour — and that certainly seems to be the case. Perhaps more importantly, higher energy costs in the last year have resulted in challenges for developers, tenants, and landlords. How will higher energy prices impact the ongoing operation of buildings? Are these issues something that can ever adequately be taken into account? How will market volatility impact the bottom line? What steps need to be taken to ensure that utility costs can be managed? How is the panel mitigating these issues?
